Wellfield School Celebrates 95 Years of Secondary Education

Celebrating a remarkable milestone, Wellfield School proudly announces its 95th anniversary, marking nearly a century of educational excellence, growth and community impact. This momentous occasion will be commemorated with a series of exciting events throughout the 2024/25 academic year, bringing together students, alumni, staff and the local community to honour the school’s rich history and envision a promising future.

Founded in 1929 Wellfield School has been a cornerstone of the community, nurturing generations of learners and preparing them for successful futures. The original school was opened by Councillor Peter Lee JP on Saturday 22nd March 1930. The school was named The A.J Dawson Secondary School after the Director of Education, who was well known in the area as he often visited schools. In subsequent years and reflecting changes to educational policy the school has been known as A.J Dawson Grammar School, Wellfield A. J Dawson Grammar School, Wellfield Comprehensive School, Wellfield Community School and now simply Wellfield School.

This anniversary provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the school’s journey and celebrate its many achievements.

The anniversary festivities will include an event to celebrate ‘Wellfield through the decades’, an evening which promises to bring together former students, staff and community members. This event will not only celebrate the past but also serve as an opportunity to raise the profile of the school to future generations.

In addition to these events, Wellfield School are putting a call out to all former students and previous members of staff to send in their memories to help create an interactive display which will be open to the public.

As Wellfield School embarks on this celebratory year, it remains committed to its mission of providing outstanding education and fostering a supportive and dynamic community. The 95th anniversary is not only a time to look back with pride but also to look forward with hope and enthusiasm, ensuring that the school continues to thrive for many years to come.

Our first event takes place on Wednesday 17th July, a coffee morning taking place between 10am – 12pm, this is an opportunity to find out more about our plans to mark this milestone.
